Fashion Week Meets Black History Month

Experiencing Fashion Week During Black History Month 2024

My experience of Black History Month 2024 was filled with fashion, and I made it a point to attend as many Black fashion designers shows as I could. While attending shows during fashion week 2024 I noticed a wide range of diverse models. The Negris Lebrum fashion show started with an a-cappella version of Marvin Gay’s “Whats Going On?” introducing the most diverse models. The collection included fabrics like tweed and red crocodile leather that I LOVED. What captured my attention was the models of all ages and races. Most fashion shows include the thiner, lighter, younger version of America, but not Negris Lebrum. As a woman, more importantly a Black woman I seen representations of my mother, aunt, and friend. It’s fashion shows like this that help blur the lines on the visual expectations of a model. I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for Negris Lebrum.

Another fashion show that I attended during Black History Month ‘24 was SFW Runway presented by Naomi Alabi. This show included six black designers, 5 was a sellable collection and the finale was for exhibit use only. The show included sellable collections by @Tatikisavostiki , @louisjeandesravines , @thehouseofruemonge , @pishposhworld , and @Kali.works. This visually well rounded show gave futuristic, vacation, street, traditional, and African heritage vibes. Lord Proverbs Illmatic Scream was the final designer and he presented a collection that was not for sale. Lord Proverbs used a collage of pop culture, high-end fabrics, and ethnic patterns to produce an 1-of-1 outerwear collection. As we approach Woman’s History Month I was more than happy to attend and support a Black woman’s vision. I am so inspired by Naomi’s determination to follow her passion while also giving other creatives the platform to sharpen their craft. Attending the SFW Runway fashion show is something I will gladly do again.
